Printmaking 101

Explore the exciting medium of relief printing in this one night workshop. Using a linoleum block, we'll learn how to print by hand by carving our own designs and transferring them to create unique pieces of art filled with layers of tones and textures.

We will begin with an overview of the relief process, going over the different tools, surfaces, and materials while also getting inspiration from artists who have mastered the technique.

The process of printmaking requires several steps, and we'll break each one down to help you create a final piece that will be a lateral inversion of what you carved. The anticipation of seeing your work evolve from sketching to carving to rolling out ink on a plate, to peeling off the ink transfer, to finally seeing your finished piece is a fun process to experience.

Instructor: Charusmitha (Smitha) Ram, whose artistic journey began from her origins in India where she studied Bachelors in Fine Arts. She grew up in Southern India in the city of Chennai and has lived and traveled extensively in East Asia before she moved to the U.S in 2004. She is particularly drawn to cultures and subcultures that have organically evolved due to the convergence of people and events over the course of many years of colonization, immigration across trade routes, settling in new lands and interracial marriage. Her most recent body of work focuses on that subject.
