Experience the intersection of art, nature, culture, and science in this 2-hour printing workshop. Gyotaku, or "fish impression" is a traditional Japanese form of nature printing, a practice used by fishermen dating back to the mid-1800s. Today, we can use rubber fish to practice these direct printing techniques with ink, paint, and rice paper.
Japanese fishermen used this printmaking method to record and track the types of fish found in local bodies of water before cameras and technology were available. The teacher, Ms. Judy, will demonstrate the method using a real fish before participants get the chance to practice using rubber whole fish. This hands-on workshop allows everyone to make several prints, discovering the wonderful textures and patterns that will be unveiled through the printmaking process.
While our prints dry, we will enjoy a snack break (goldfish!) and time for socializing before we get the chance to bring them to life with color. Dress to mess!
