Experiments with Printmaking

Tuesday January 14

Other dates...

7:00 PM  –  9:00 PM

Explore the exciting medium of relief printing! Using a linoleum block, we'll learn how to print by hand by carving our own designs and transferring them to create unique pieces of art filled with layers of tones and textures.

We will begin with an overview of the relief process, going over the different tools, surfaces, and materials while also getting inspiration from artists who have mastered the technique. Throughout the weeks we will progress to more complex compositions, moving from 2 colors with a reduction process to using multiple blocks and rolling techniques to create varied artwork.

Instructor: Charusmitha (Smitha) Ram, whose artistic journey began from her origins in India where she studied Bachelors in Fine Arts. She grew up in Southern India in the city of Chennai and has lived and traveled extensively in East Asia before she moved to the U.S in 2004. She is particularly drawn to cultures and subcultures that have organically evolved due to the convergence of people and events over the course of many years of colonization, immigration across trade routes, settling in new lands and interracial marriage. Her most recent body of work focuses on that subject.

Materials: Students must supply their own carving tools and printing blocks, while all other materials are included in the tuition. For the first class, you do not need to buy anything as your instructor will be reviewing all materials in that first session.
